So hot! Hotpot karaoke
12 May 2009 Leave a Comment
This is a group work done in the interactivity class. The idea of the work is to sing karaoke while at the same time having hotpot. There is a computer monitor which act as the bowl. By using pure data for programming, when player first open up the lid, then we can see that the food is floating on the screen. Besides, there are a spoon, a pair of chopsticks and a hand-made ”PDA” as the device to control or play the game. The spoon is attached to a microphone for people to sing karaoke. If louder voice is detected, then the food would float upper and bigger. After a while, the food maybe overcooked. Then players need to use chopsticks to pick up the food. There are wires placing on the tip of the chopsticks, so when players do the action of picking up things, the two tips of wire touch each other and then all the food would be gone. The PDA is used to order new food. There are magnet inside the PDA. When we use a fake PDA pen which is made by magnet to touch the surface of the PDA, two magnets would be attracted and it can then call the program to add the food in the pot. In total, there are four choices of food.
Ocean Music Lantern – Mediated Perception
12 May 2009 Leave a Comment
This work is a music lantern, which is the combination of traditional music box and a Chinese optical toy. I tried to combine these two obsolete models into one as I want to create an obsolete audio and visual toy. I appreciate much of the Chinese style of horse running lantern so I would like to adopt this visual aids in my work. However, by personal choice I choose the ocean creatures as the running object. I create a black box as the music box and there is a translucent side as the screen. While the music box is turned on, the sea creatures like the fish, the octopus will goes around in the box and you can watch it from the screen. The translucent screen creates an effect of watching a small 3-D movie inside the box.

Short novel…(creative writing)

Why not?
This is one of my best pieces of writing. Actually I usually write poems but seldom write long essays or novels. However, during the last few lessons of Creative Writing class, the teacher asks us to break through our usual writing style and try something new and nice. Therefore I try to write a short story about culture of Hong Kong. Moreover, I try to make the story funny and crazy, which is very different from what I usually write. The setting of the story is in a Hong Kong style restaurant, and the characters are all food and drinks that we can usually find in the restaurant. I try to describe the scenes in great details about the scenario and the actions of the characters. I give each food a special characteristic according to which cuisine do they belong (like芝士焗肉醬意粉 represents a western lady), what kind of people usually eat them(chicken wings and fruit punch represent children as children like to eat these very much) , the method of cooking them (古法清蒸石班is doing the facial), etc. These also make the story become more look like people we can see in daily life. The more important thing is that when they meet a question like “Do Hong Kong really have its own culture?”, since they have different characteristics, they have different opinions towards the question. This can also make the readers think whether Hong Kong really have its own culture more seriously. However, most of the people only care about their own matters but not these kinds of social issues. They would just keep doing their own stuffs until the matter affects their lives. I write in a way of exaggerated comedy to write the ending for two reasons. First, the situation is like when the dominos fall down one by one, we can find the kind of tension between. Second, even for me I do not really know what the true answer for Hong Kong’s culture is. Therefore I only set up an ending without concluding the discussion and leave some room for the readers to think about it.

Typography

in Typography
I have done several works which is related to typography, including graphic, poster and animation.
(Click the thumnails to enlarge the pictures)
Words from a loveletter:
Typography poster for a charity organization:
This is a poster making for an Africa charity organization called Watoto. The organization takes care of children who lost their parents from death due to Aids. Instead of using a sad face of the child in the poster, we can see a big smile from his face, as just like what caption said: “They smile because of our love.” The face of the child are composed with characters “s”, “m”, “i”, “l” and “e”, which represents smile on his face. As the organization is in Africa, the poster also adopts African style. It is mainly in brown color with a grunge background. Moreover, the typefaces used are also in wild and raw style. One is like fingerprints and the other one is like the style of aborigines.
My second typography animation (Music Video):
This is the second kinetic typography animation I made. It is a 50s long music-based animation. The song I used for this video is “Make Some Noise” by Krystal Meyers. It talks about young adults like us should voice out our opinions and make some noise for the society. I like the song very much as I like the concept behind this song and the lyrics are meaningful, too. I used different graphics and typefaces to compose the scenes in the video, but I still try to stick to the pop vector graphic style as I think it is the best choice to represent teenagers. The whole video is very colorful like my usual style of composing graphics.
Also, I tried to create the atmosphere of the graphics or typefaces which suits with the meaning of the lyrics. For example, I use a more scientific feeling and wide length typefaces to write the word “future”, instead of adopting the same grunge typefaces with the other lyrics. Besides, I create corresponding animation for the words which matches their meanings. There is a line “Don’t tell me we should turn it down” in the lyrics, and I have added the animation to make the words “turn it down” become really turning down. It creates interesting impacts. Although it is quite difficult to composite the animation using AfterEffects, I enjoy making the video and make the words move.
